From mountain peaks to Pacific waves — we trade our trail shoes for surfboards

Today we leave the mountains behind and make our way to the Pacific coast. It's our longest transfer of the trip, so sit back, relax, have a nap or simply enjoy watching the scenery change.

Our destination is Santa Catalina, a laid-back surf town known for sweeping beaches, world-class waves and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

We'll check into Bambuda Santa Catalina, our oceanfront home for two nights. With incredible sea views, a pool, bar/restaurant, and unforgettable sunsets, it's the perfect place to slow the pace.

This afternoon we'll hit the waves with a surf lesson. Whether it's your first time or you've surfed plenty before, instructors will split us into suitable groups. Santa Catalina is home to La Punta, one of Panama's most famous breaks, attracting surfers from all around the world.

Afterwards, toast your progress with a cocktail from the swim-up pool bar before heading into town for dinner at a local restaurant, and soaking up the easy-going beach vibes.

Day 6

Santa Catalina to Coiba: sail, snorkel and sleep under the stars

We'll kick off the day with an early run or hike to beat the heat, taking in coastal views and a loop through town. After breakfast and a quick shower, we'll leave our bags in storage and head out on a mini expedition to the remote islands of Coiba National Park.

A 90-minute boat ride takes us into this UNESCO-listed marine and rainforest reserve. Once a former penal colony, it's now one of Panama's greatest natural treasures, home to pristine reefs, untouched jungle and world-class snorkelling with sharks, rays, turtles and abundant marine life.

February also happens to be prime whale shark season, so with a little luck we'll have the chance to jump in and snorkel alongside these gentle giants during their migration.

The rest of the day is spent swimming, snorkelling and relaxing on remote beaches while camp is set up. After a simple freshwater rinse, we'll settle in for an unforgettable night under the stars, completely immersed in nature.

Day 9

Depart at any time today as the journey comes to an end — or, if you have a little more time, San Blas is a beautiful cultural extension to continue exploring Panama.

While Coiba National Park is all about remote Pacific wilderness and wildlife encounters, the San Blas Islands offer a very different experience on the Caribbean side — slow-paced island-hopping, turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and time with the Guna communities who have lived there for generations.
